America & Europe After 9/11 and Iraq: The Great Divide [transcript/video]

  • Address to the Foreign Policy Association
  • Grupo Santander, 45 East 53rd Street (Between Park & Madison Ave)
  • January 23, 2007 5:30 PM

Sarwar Kashmeri, author of America and Europe After 9/11 & Iraq: The Great Divide, addressed the Foreign Policy Association on the critical need to repair the badly damaged transatlantic relationship. Drawing on his experience as a global communications consultant and international affairs observer, Kashmeri argues that the U.S. must cease viewing an increasingly influential Europe through "Anglo-tinted" lenses, while Europeans should make greater good-faith efforts to restore the historic partnership between the two powers.

Interview: Sarwar Kashmeri, author, "America and Europe after 9/11 and Iraq: The Great Divide"
Mitch Wertlieb

          COLCHESTER, VT (2007-02-08)

He's had private conversations with some of the world's most powerful heads of state, including the first President Bush, former British Prime Minister John Major, and General Wesley Clark.

So when it comes to perspectives on why the United States is at odds with the nations that make up the European Union, there are few people with more insight than Sarwar Kashmeri.

Kashmeri lives in Reading, Vermont, and advises corporations in strategic communications and marketing. Tonight at Lyndon State College he'll discuss his new book about the fractured relationship between the U.S. and the E.U.

He spoke with Mitch Wertlieb and says the tale of the initial romance and eventual ugly break up begins with the headline in France's largest newspaper Le Monde that said following the 9/11 attacks We are all Americans Now.

The Great Divide: America and Europe after 9/11 and Iraq

By Laura Knoy on Friday, January 19, 2007.

In a new book, Vermont-based author, observer and commentator Sarwar Kashmeri says the alliance between the United States and Europe "...is dead, cannot be fixed and must be renegotiated". Kashmeri points to the United States ' handling of the war in Iraq as well as the European Union's emergence as a major power with different foreign priorities to support his claims. Today we'll look at our relations with Europe , how they've altered and how we may need to change up rules to our relationship to remain allies in the future. Laura's guest is Sarwar Kashmeri, Vermont-based Strategic Communications Advisor, Business Columnist and Author of "The Great Divide: America and Europe after 9/11 and Iraq "
